My name is Jessica DeLong and I wish to welcome you to the CM Forum on Mom Delights. Sherry was kind enough to allow me to be moderator of this forum. I pray that all discussions are encouraging and a blessing to your CM education and life. ❤️
Hi Jessica! Picture Study winner here! 🙂
I’ve come across recitation as part of CM education. Is this something you include? If so, how? My “school” kiddos will be 7 and 5 next school year. Is this something to do with them or older kids?
Yes, I do remember you. 🙂 To answer your question, yes, we do recitation. If I remember correctly, in the PNEU the younger forms did recitation daily. Recitation can come from poetry, short story, etc. Typically, I have my younger students read a portion of poetry a couple times of week, besides their reading. You are looking for enunciation, proper stoppage for end marks and the like. If the child seems stumped for what you are trying to get out of the lesson, read for them in a monotone voice then read the same thing again more animated so they see the difference. For my older children, we typically have a portion of Friday devoted to where each child stands and reads their portion from whatever they studied in the McGuffey’s that week. If it is a long passage I will mark a starting and stopping point. For my senior student this year, I purchased McGuffey’s sixth reader from Google Books, it is mostly about elocution and recitation. However, I don’t think you’ll need that for a little bit. 😉 Blessings
Thank you for your quick response. I am working on adding poetry into our daily life. I suggested poetry tea time to my 6 and 4 yr old and they LOVED the idea! I look forward to it after this “newborn at home” phase.
However, I have been asking her to read her McGuffey lesson outloud every day. She’s only in the 1st reader. She’s doing great, I’ll make sure to discuss proper enunciation with her.
